Working with non-profit organizations it has come to our attention that many organizations could operate so much better if they just had the right tools. They don’t have the right tools because they lack the resources to develop those tools.

As part of TS4M’s quest to serve non-profit organizations we are looking at ways to develop the tools that are needed. As a start we are looking at developing a suite of tools for member management. This would be mostly focused at churches, but may find usefulness in other organizations too.

The aim is to make all applications we develop available free under open source licensing.

Umthi

Umthi is the provisional project name for our member management suite. The first module is currently under development. This is an event registration module, which is web-based and will capture details of people attending specific events. The captured data will be customisable.

(Umthi is a Xhosa word meaning “Tree”)

Our first software development project is underway. The idea was inspired by a friend of mine who was running a kid’s club in the holidays. She needed a way to allow parents to sign up for the kids club via her website.

Event sign-up is a pretty standard function for many organizations and so that got me thinking about creating a customisable sign-up form.

And thus the event registration module was formed. I am coding it using Django since that greatly simplifies the process. It’s still a work in progress, but a sample will be linked here soon.
